How to move files in the Finder on OSX

Being a Windows switcher about 6 years ago I was unpleasantly surprised that there is no clear way to cut and paste or move a file or folder in the Finder. With all the great ways that OSX has made me substantially more productive than I was on Windows, I find that this is very poor an Apple's part to miss such a simple but important function in their file browser Finder.

Luckily I have found that there is a slightly hidden and fairly unknown way of actually moving a file in the finder. Here are some simple steps of moving a file or folder in Finder on OSX.

  1. Click and hold on the file or folder that you want to move.
  2. Hold down the cmd button ⌘ on the keyboard.
    Step_1__2
  3. Drag folder or file to new location and release mouse button then cmd key ⌘.
    Step_3

This is so simple but not very well documented and it took me a bit of searching on the web to find it. Hope this is as help to others as it has been for me?

Crush It Book Review

For a while I have been looking for a way to earn a living doing what I’m passionate about and after watching some inspiring videos of Gary Vaynerchuk at different conferences I decided to purchase his book “CrushIt”. After browsing books on the amazon.co.uk I came across the kindle ebook enhanced version of the book for £7.03 inc vat. The ebook downloaded to my kindle app on the iphone within minutes and synced well with the kindle app for the Mac. The enhanced part of the book has short videos from Gary with tips, comments and interviews to do with the chapters topic.

In the book Gary talks about developing your personal brand and why everyone needs to / should develop their personal brand. Gary explains in detail why developing your brand is crucial in this digital age and how to use social media as a tool to do this. He explains how you need to consistently ‘hustle’ with other people and be genuine.

Gary talks about using the medium that you are most comfortable using and can do well to create great content. If you can write then write blog posts, if you have a good voice then create audio (i.e. podcast), If your comfortable in front of the camera then try video.

Favourite quotes from the book

Love your family. Work superhard. Live your passion.

Everyone – EVERYONE – needs to start thinking of themselves as a brand. It is no longer an option; it is a necessity.

Learn to live your passion and you’ll have all the money.

In the chapter “Choose your platform” he only mentioned Wordpress and Tumblr. But he could have mentioned other great blogging platforms such as Posterous or SquareSpace. Although Wordpress and Tumblr are good tools for creating a site to publish lots of content and the book was published a few years ago when Posterous and SquareSpace were in their infancy

Conclusion

I found the book inspiring and full of useful and clever information on making your brand a business. After reading this book I would recommend CrushIt! to anyone who is looking to work everyday doing something that they love or are passionate about. Gary Vaynerchuk’s next book “The Thank You Economy” will be out March 2011 and it is at the top of my book to buy list.

The New Mac App Store Has Arrived!

On Thursday 6th January 2011 Apple released their new Mac App Store via the 10.6.6 update and of course I downloaded it first thing with no download issues. My first impression was how clean and uncluttered the user interface is with a similar layout format to the iTunes app store. The only concern is it may get difficult to find the apps you really looking for once the store gets as many apps as the iOS app store.

The store has a quite a big collection of different Mac apps mainly at prices below £20 which was a pleasant surprise. Apples iWork and iLife apps are available to be purchased separately and you can buy both suites for a lot less than the physical boxed versions. Although iDVD and iWeb are missing from the collection of iLife apps on the store. The most pleasant app price surprise was that Apple's pro photography software Aperture 3.0 is only £44.99 in the app store. The same product selling on a physical DVD in an Apple Retail store is £173 which I always thought was slightly over priced.

The traditional desktop licensing model has been turned on its head by the new Mac App Store licensing. With the new licensing you buy an app once and install it on any number of Mac's authenticated with your Apple ID. There are many popular apps currently missing from the store some due to not being able to comply with Mac App Store developer guidelines. Here are some of the apps that are currently not in the store:

Apps that by functionality that do not comply with app review guidelines

  • VmWare Fusion
  • SuperDuper
  • CarbonCopy Cloner

Other apps just not submitted in the app store

  • Kindle
  • Chrome
  • Colloquy
  • Skype
  • Skitch
  • iWeb
  • iDVD
  • Textexpander
  • Quickbooks 2010
  • Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Scrivner
  • Textmate
  • Cyberduck
  • Bento
  • Toast

Conclusion

Although the new Mac App Store is far from perfect and has some teething issues, it provides a convenient one stop shop for a wide range of software for the Mac. A lot of people that currently own a Mac or are switching from Windows to the Mac are not comfortable at purchasing apps off sites they do not trust or do not know where to discover apps on the internet.

How to enable 1Password 2.x in Safari 5 for Leopard:

1. Close Safari
2. Go to the /Applications/ folder
3. Right click on 1password.app, hit “Show Package Contents”
4. Navigate to /Contents/Resources/

8. Launch Safari 5.

The 1Password contextual menu will now be usable in Safari 5. You will need to add the 1Password button to your toolbar again using View > Customize Toolbar.

You can delete the SupportedBrowsers.plist file or just keep it somewhere else safe just incase.
